In 1837, what is now known as the City of Atlanta was founded at the starting point on the Western and Atlantic Railroad. Originally named Terminus, due to its location on the railroad, it was later renamed Marthasville, supposedly after the then-Governor’s daughter.

According to some sources, the name Terminus was never official and between 1837 and 1842 the area was alternately called Deanville and Thrasherville. It was named again and incorporated as Atlanta, named after the Atlantic-Pacific railroad, on December 29, 1847.
